Salford’s foremost experimental festival, Fat Out Fest, returns for its 4th edition. On 14th, 15th, and 16th April 2017, Islington Mill will see the return of Fat Out Fest, a 3 day glitter-coated celebration of independent art and music brought to you by Salford’s experimental DIY promoters’, Fat Out Til You Pass Out.
Taking place at Islington Mill and two surrounding warehouses on Regents Trading Estate, Fat Out will curate a stage on each day of the festival, whilst opening up their festival to their collaborators – Lisa Meyer (Supersonic Festival, Birmingham), Anthony Chalmers (Baba Yaga’s Hut, London), Garth Be (Sweet Sticky, Manchester), John Doran (The Quietus), Lovers and Lollypops (Milhoes de Festa Festival, Portugal), and a collaboration between Le Guess Who? (Netherlands) and Basilica Hudson (Hudson NY) – giving them full curatorial control over the programming of their stages. With over 60 performances over three days, the international curatorial collaborators will seek to ensure a diverse and adventurous programme that will blur the boundaries between music, art and partying in true Fat Out style.
Kicking off on Friday with Fat Out and Baba Yaga’s Hut stages; an uncompromising heavy performance from The Bug vs Dylan Carlson of Earth, blistering guitar dynamics from Blood Sport, austere minimalist sounds from Housewives, raw, visceral music from British underground figures Test Debt, and the almighty hardy toon terrors Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs.
On Saturday Basilica Hudson & Le Guess Who exhibit an edition of their immersive and all-encompassing 24 Hour Drone experience including a re-imagining of Tony Conrad’s seminal work Outside the Dream Syndicate (CUSP) and plant amplification from Alexandra Duvekot & The Plant Orchestra. Over on The Quietus stage the ultimate tag team of noise and free jazz form as Sly and The Dead Neanderthals ft. Colin Webster alongside Lone Taxidermist’s and their glutinous AV show, TRIFLE. Philadelphia based Moor Mother, project cathartic anger and improvisatory spirit on to the Fat Out stage, plus Japanese avant-garde synth wave duo Group A, and a debut performance from Charles Hayward of This Heat new project Data Quack, which promises an array of abstract textures, car chase sequences and violent grooves.
Sunday ignites with the freewheeling sonic blitz of Cairo’s Islam Chipsy & EEK, and dirty clobbering rockers Part Chimp courtesy of Fat Out. Portuguese Lovers and Lollypops bring guitar-mesmerist Filho da Mãe, and lo-fi electronic wizard Jibóia to the mix, plus explosive post-rock polymaths TRANS AM, and majestic collective The Seer. Body Eye. For Spirit Eye illuminate Lisa Meyer’s Supersonic stage.
Over the weekend The Wire Magazine will host Q& A’s with Moor Mother and Charles Hayward, delving into their creative practises, politics and future projects.
Independent video, art and performance collective CHERYL, based in Brooklyn, NYC, will be the artistic directors of Fat Out Fest 2017, taking on the role to create an all encompassing experience for the festival audience. Also on offer will be artist led workshops, art installations, surprise performances, DJs, shit-loads of glitter as well as delicious speciality foods.
