From time to time, one of our contributors will recommend an artist/band they think deserves your attention. No record labels, PR companies, bands or band’s management will ever have made these recommendations. It is simply one music fan putting their taste on the line in the hope of sharing good music. The questions are intended to give just a basic introduction to possibly your new favourite artist/band.
So without further ado, let’s crack on with another introduction, in which Silent Radio’s Editor Simon Poole recommends Here Are The Young Men for your audible delectation.
*****
- Who are ya?
Jason aka Here Are The Young Men
- Where are you from?
From Woking, but live in Reading. It’s a shit hole.
- How long have you been doing what you’re doing now?
I’ve only been doing the Here Are The Young Men project for about 9 months. It’s basically me writing and recording music at home using a mix of samples and actual bonafide instrument playing. I then search out interesting, talented, odd people I get on with to bring words to the music. The main bloke I work with is a Punk MC / Spoken word fella called Uncle Peanut.
- Is being a musician your full time job?
Nah, used to be though….when I was an actual Young Man.
- Are there any obvious influences in your music?
Early UK Punk and New Wave, John Cooper Clarke….etc etc. Recently we’ve been seen as a sort of more cartoon Sleaford Mods, but I reckon that’s just because we’ve opened for them a few times and look like freaks.
- Are there any not so obvious influences in your music?
1970’s Brirish Public Information Films, vintage Look In Magazines.
- Any musical Guilty Pleasures? Come on you can share, we’re all friends here!
Ripples by Genesis
- Apart from yourself of course, what other band/artist would you recommend our readers check out?
Uncle Peanut, God Damn, Evil Blizzard and Thee Faction
- Tell us about the defining moment when you thought ‘Fuck, yes I want to be a musician!’
Hearing AC/DC’s ‘If You Want Blood’ album as a kid.
- Does what go on, on tour, stay on tour?
Apart from STDs, they come home with you.
- What’s your most favourite gig (as a gig goer)?
The Specials, Brixton Academy…few years back.
- Who, in your wildest dreams would you like to collaborate with/be produced by?
I’d LOVE to work with Viv Albertine, I asked her but she said no. She was dead nice though. Kila Kella likes me and Peanut…..we asked him to collaborate. We’re still waiting for an answer.
- Best place for people to find out what you are up to?
Anything to declare?
Me and Peanut killed a man.
