Besides the annual Sounds From The Other City weekender festival taking place at Islington Mill every year, the independent cultural hob that is Islington Mill has now had another array of acts added for a full weekend this May.
Two of Manchester’s most prominent underground promoters, Grey Lantern and wotgodforgot, have teamed up to present a two-night residency at the Salford venue, curated by their self-proclaimed favourite bands of the past ten years; Hookworms.
London-based Novella will be kicking things off on Friday, as the group will show their signature combination of heavy yet melodic basslines with Pixies-inspired crispiness. Added to this, locals Sex Hands will counter this with some high-end guitar and yelping vocals. Consisting of members from Klaus Kinski, Irma Vep and Waiters, it’s an underground supergroup you’ll have never heard of before.
Featuring twice in different outfits over the weekend, Mazes’ Jack Cooper plays his first set on the Friday, as he has set up a new project together with James from Veronica Falls: Ultimate Painting.
Once you’ve recovered from this and are game for another round, a 5pm start on Saturday means extra time for more music. Cold Pumas from Brighton will shake the Mill’s foundations to its core with their abrasive and rough sounds. If you are looking for that perfect hangover cure, look no further than Vision Fortune to provide you with drone and darkness, with an electronic touch.
Lovers of Krautrock can feast their ears on Jack Coopers’ second set of the weekend with his band, Mazes. Prepping to release the follow-up to 2013’s Ores & Minerals later this year, the band are sure to be showcasing some new material. Then there’s a Manchester-debut lined up as Sealings will showcase what ice-cold post-punk from Brighton sounds like. Completing the bill are Bill Young and Moon Gangs.
Friday £8.50 / Saturday £9.50 / Weekend £15
