Karine Polwart has recently confirmed A Pocket Of Wind Resistance for release on Friday 17th November 2017 (through Hudson Records) – the album is the musical accompaniment to her self-written, directed & performed theatre production ‘Wind Resistance’, which debuted at last year’s Edinburgh Festival.
The project has been informed by Karine’s close-hand view of thousands of geese migrating to Fala Flow, a small peat bog by her home near Edinburgh. Fascinated by the way the birds take turns within their skeins to create pockets of wind resistance to aid each other’s flight, Polwart began to consider the ways in which humans depend on each other – whether we too form skeins of our own.
It’s an idea Karine explores on ‘Labouring And Resting’, the first track to be aired from the new album.
Speaking about the album, Karine says; “It’s a meditation on the ways in which we, as humans, protect and care for one another, and for all life, by stepping up, falling back, labouring and resting in our own fashion. In particular, it’s a hymn to mothers and birthing, to the proffering of sanctuary, to the miracle of medicine, and a reminder, a warning, about the consequences of isolating and forgetting.”
