-BAND ON THE WALL, MANCHESTER-
A lot can happen to a band in just over a year and for Perth’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, to use the term bumper would be a huge understatement. Returning to Manchester for the fourth time in thirteen months, the band, somewhat unsurprisingly, have sold out yet another venue and continue to deliver their ever-expanding talent and whole-heartedness for their profession.
Support comes from Crows, an up and coming English rock band who have been accompanying the Porn Crumpets throughout their UK and are quickly rising through the ranks thanks to their raucous and brutal delivery of their overall music, gritty lyrics and frenetic energy of each member which can deliver a sense of breathlessness just through observing them.
Band on The Wall is this occasion’s venue which quickly descends from calmness into chaos thanks to the Crumpets’ unmatchable energy and ability to draw a crowd in. After selling out Camden’s Electric Ballroom earlier in the week to 1250 people, Band on The Wall may have almost a tenth less of that, but the franticness of both the band and crowd is definitely rivalling. The set list consists of tracks from the first three albums including several fan favourites such as ‘Found God in a Tomato’, ‘Social Candy’ and ‘Ergophobia’. Also thrown in mid-set is their latest release of ‘Mundungus’ which, unsurprisingly, has cooked up yet another storm within the fan base.
One thing that is very noticeable and can only be praised in the highest manner is the band’s confidence whilst playing which has definitely seen a significant increase since last year. New and impressive on-stage jams have been added to songs to make the heaviness of songs even better and push up the band’s professionalism, which is unsurprising after relentless touring around the globe in a rather short space of time.
Interestingly, ‘Surf’s Up’ is chosen as the opening track, where members of the crowd had noted it had been ‘Gurzle’ for the last few visits. However, this makes no difference as far as the crowd are concerned as the band rips into their set and continue solidly for over an hour. Having now conquered the US, Europe continues to consistently sell out which, as stated, isn’t unnoticed by the genuineness of the band. This band has a unique ability to create a wall of both noise and heat which is seldom seen so frequently and tightly. Despite the capacity of just over 300, the band’s musical ability displays why they have been so successful and have been drafted to support larger acts such as Interpol and Royal Blood across Europe with their unique sound, complex riffs and tracks from every instrument.
The set ends with a rapturous rendition of ‘Cornflake’ before the usual encore of ‘Nek’, met by deafening applause. No doubt, the band will see similar success whenever they may return, which going by their frequency of touring may be sooner rather than later.
Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are always going to attract attention with a name such as theirs, but as they continue to grow, it is certain that it is now more likely to be for their musical talent rather than the chuckle someone might get from seeing it on a gig list around a global city.
