With its sparse, yet super-melodic intro, ‘Girls Like You’, the 4th single from Passive Me, Aggressive You, caught me off guard on first listen. Immediately electronic, with synth sounds swelling between percussion, it is reminiscent of MGMT’s ‘Oracular Spectacular’, which is,of course, no bad thing, but it does mean that The Naked & Famous are not exactly pushing artistic boundaries. The song builds up into big beats and synth textures supporting an attractive melody, and I found myself doing nodding my head along without realising. This is the appeal of this song; it’s not high art, and it’s not particularly innovative, but the melody is almost annoyingly sing-a-long-ish and it will definitely fill dance floors wherever it’s played. There’s not much variety in the structure but the electro feel keeps up the energy and it’s never boring.
If you want to find something new and exciting or musically complicated then maybe this track is not for you, but if you are looking for something to dance to, something to sing along with or something that’s just sounds happy, you couldn’t go too far wrong with ‘Girls Like You’.
