‘Speak’ is accompanied by a live performance video, filmed in the black stone and cavernous setting of one of the UK’s few rackets courts. The location has a nuclear shelter feel to it, rather than a sports court. It was directed by Spring Offensive’s long-term collaborator Sam King.
Self produced and mixed by Emre Ramazanoglu (Warpaint, Palma Violets, Summer Camp) ‘Speak’ shows off a fresh side to the band with it’s hypnotic driving loop and clattering rhythms underpinning their more familiar group harmonies and evocative lyrics. Written in a remote cottage in Wales and recorded in a living room home studio by David Pye (Wild Beasts, Faithless), ‘Speak’ is about being closed off and seeking isolation, about crawling into yourself to avoid confrontation. The lyrics teeter on the edge of a confession, but despite the build up, the ‘thing’ that so desperately needs to be communicated never is.
