Twisted Reel, the Northern Quarter’s regular film night, is screening ‘Dig!’
Compiled from seven years of footage, Ondi Timoner’s ‘Dig!’ contrasts the developing careers and love-hate relationship of the bands ‘The Dandy Warhols’ and ‘The Brian Jonestown Massacre’ and the bands’ respective front men Courtney Taylor-Taylor and Anton Newcombe.
Dig! Is a study in delusion, drug fuelled madness, jealousy and paranoia, as the two front men’s relationship slides from friendship to sabotage and restraining orders. Although ostensibly a music documentary there is relatively little of their actual music featured, the appeal lies in the increasingly bizarre behaviour of the protagonists, particularly Newcombe, and the glimpse it provides into the ‘politics’ of the independent music scene.
‘Dig!’ won the Documentary Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.
Empire – 5 out of 5 stars
BBC Movies – “Erratic, tragic and absolutely hilarious: Dig! Is fantastic filmmaking that works as both a savagely funny rockumentary and a sardonic comment on the politics of selling out”
