KUTOSIS

KUTOSIS

  • Who are ya?

KUTOSIS.

  • Where are you from?

Cardiff.

  • How long have you been doing what you’re doing now?

Five years.

  • Is being a musician your full time job?

No, we all have full-time jobs outside the sphere of music.

  • Are there any obvious influences in your music?

On our first album a lot of people picked up on the mclusky and Future of the Left influence, probably because we’re from the same city. Our recent album Dream It Away took a very different surf-pop direction.

  • Are there any not so obvious influences in your music?

We’re big fans of Kurt Vile but I don’t know how easy it is to pick that up in our music.

  • Any musical Guilty Pleasures? Come on you can share, we’re all friends here!

There’s nothing guilty about enjoying Phil Collins era Genesis.

  • Apart from yourself of course, what other band/artist would you recommend our readers check out?

Our good friends Samoans!

  • Tell us about the defining moment when you thought ‘Fuck, yes I want to be a musician!’

After watching Wayne’s World.

  • Does what go on, on tour, stay on tour?

No.

  • What’s your most favourite gig (as a gig goer)?

The three of us went to Primavera in 2009 and saw some of our all-time favourite bands in an incredible location – Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Yo La Tengo and Girls.

  • Who, in your wildest dreams would you like to collaborate with/be produced by?

Chet JR White – the mastermind behind Girls.

  • Do you think it’s important for bands to have a music video to accompany their releases?

Videos are another avenue for being creative, and we try to embrace the visual side of being involved in music.

  • Do you think the music video is having a bit of a renaissance? If so, why?

I suppose so, although it never really went away. Musicians are probably having to get used to working with smaller budgets than before and so have to be more creative, but that’s coincided with technology being more accessible.

  • A lot of musicians love the idea of getting their music released on vinyl, does making your first music video give the same feeling?

They’re different but both mean something to us. We released our second album Dream It Away on vinyl last year, which was always an ambition of ours.

  • Who produced the video and how do you go about choosing who makes it?

Crystal Beach was produced by Ryan Owen Eddleston. He’s originally from Manchester way but is based in Cardiff now. We really liked his previous music videos so asked him if he could produce ours!

  • Did you enjoy the process of making the video, and can you tell us a little about it?

We had an initial meeting to discuss ideas, film references and what the song is about, and built on it from there. It’s a trippy video that evokes a Welsh version of the Mojave Desert.

  • From start to finish how long did the whole process take?

It took a few months from inception to getting the finished product but the filming and editing itself was done over a matter of days. It was important though to get all the details right from the outset.

  • What three tips would you give to an act thinking of making a music video?

Collaborate, find the right location, and start early.

  • Best place for people to find out what you are up to?

@KUTOSIS / kutosis.co.uk / Bandcamp / Facebook

  • Anything to declare?

Dream It Away is out now on Jealous Lovers Club.
