UK Indie darlings Daughter release video for the rather odd track “No Care”, taken from their latest record ‘Not to Disappear’ (2016).
When you first watch the video for “No Care” it comes across very 90s, probably due to its parts in black and white and flashing reds whilst the band perform. The music itself for me is very American, despite the band being based in London. Usually, I cringe at stuff like this intensely. Bands like these often bore me with the over simplicity, where nothing really seems to happen. However, Daughter manage to make it simple enough to get lost in, not to discard as filler or weightless, and never so complicated that you regard it as prog, throw it in the bin, then move on.
The simplicity of the guitar above the frantic drumming creates an odd, dark feeling. This is made even bleaker with the casually spoken, at times awkward fitting, poetry spun by frontwoman Elena Tonra. This trio know how to make “beautiful”, soaring neo-folk better than many of their contemporaries so this video and their albums, their debut entitled ‘If You leave’, are definetley worth a listen and viewing.
