Love Morrissey? Hate his terrible opinions and attitudes? Don’t fancy seeing him live, but think a tribute act might be a bit naff? What if I told you there was another way?
Mexrrissey might be the band for you. It’s a simple concept – they play Morrissey songs, but they’re from Mexico City. Irish blood, English heart, Mexican band.
“In Mexico Morrissey has always been a prophet with honour.” (I hope nobody tells them about everything he’s said since 1990) “His songs of love, loss and longing, with powerful imagery and metaphors have found a huge audience and chimed with generations raised on rancheras and mariachis and their singers who were not afraid to cross the line.
Now the love has been returned, with a band made in Mexico City reinventing Morrissey’s and The Smiths’ songs south of the border. Together they sound like a brass and string led combo from the smallest village with the biggest bleeding heart.”
Thus far their output has been mostly Morrissey covers, but luckily for those of us with a soft spot for The Smiths and a less soft spot for Morrissey’s steadily worsening output, they’ll be playing the whole of classic Smiths album The Queen is Dead live, starting with this Friday at Manchester’s Albert Hall.
